The Bektashi World Centre is an emblematic and spiritual place, located in the north-eastern part of Tirana approximately 1 km away from its center. It consists of a Teqe, museum, and gift shop, all designed to pay homage to the 800 year old history and philosophy of the Bektashi Order.

The Teqe stands out due to its majestic marbled mosaics that adorn every aspect of it’s walls, ceiling and floors. The museum in the basement houses a rich collection of documents, photographs, relics and other artefacts that tell the story of the Bektashi order. There is also a small gift shop where visitors can buy various items related to Bektashism.

The Bektashi Order is a dervish sect that synthesizes elements from Shia and Sufi beliefs into an independent Islamic belief system. It was founded during the 13th century in Persia (present day Iran) before it spread south into Albania during Ottoman rule. Its presence was even banned briefly on two separate occasions by both Ottoman authorities in 1826 as well as Turkish authorities 1925 – leading to its headquarters being transferred to Albania which is now one of four major religions followed there.

Since then, followers have found refuge and community at the Bektashi World Centre – a place where they can respectfully practice their traditions and pass down their teachings while providing visitors with insight into their religion. Visitors are able to experience first hand the beauty of this Sufi-Shia blend through their artwork and artifacts displayed throughout the centre – items which serve as reminders for current followers as well as potential newcomers looking to learn a bit more about this ancient faith.
