The National Archaeological Museum in Tirana is one of the most important museums in the country. It was opened in 1948 and its collections include some of the most famous archaeological artifacts found not only within Albania but also from other countries.

Featuring over 2,100 objects, including jewelry, statues and clay pots from Prehistoric, Classical and Medieval times as well as Modern period, the museum holds items that range from priceless treasures to everyday objects used by people throughout history. Sadly though, the museum’s layout is not great with many items difficult to locate and without any explanation or tour available in English.

Still, The National Archaeological Museum remains a must-see for anyone visiting Tirana as it houses some of the most valuable archaeological finds not just in the country but also from around the world. Apart from showcasing Albanian artifacts it is also a parent institution for further museums located throughout Albania such as Durrës Archaeological Museum.

Although the National Archaeological Museum offers an interesting experience with its vast collection of items, visitors should be aware that there are several other exhibitions housed at different locations throughout Tirana which could offer a better experience than this particular museum due to their more modern layouts and availability of tours in English language such as Skanderberg Square’s National History Museum.
